Esprit de Corps

Welcome to the twenty-second installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week or so to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed to Check for other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month topic is brought to us by L’Dene Bean of Nitpickin’s who asks: Why, and how did you pick your corporation? Is your loyalty solid or just until a better placed organization “recruits” you. The shorter version: Who holds your Unshakable Fealty and why?

Yes, I know, esprit de corps means morale and not loyalty, but bear with me here, and everything should become clear.

During my 2 years piloting ships amongst the stars, I was only ever with one player run corp. I know my employee history shows otherwise:

but trust me on this. SAW became Axxeon, which then became Rule of Five, Covenant of Five was a holding corporation that some of us moved to because we got sick of the constant war decs (I flew in many fleet ops, so don’t think I was being a chicken shit) before we were able to move into The 5th Freedom, which is the PVP/Null Sec wing of the JUNTA gaming clan. There is, of course, the requisite move to Estel Arador for jump clones, and if you need some, seriously, use the service (shameless plug, they are awesome), but I digress. For a year and a half, I remained loyal to the JUNTA clan, until I was expelled for this, which in my opinion was utter bullshit since it was all my own stuff that I lost and I was scouting the ship out too (only a moron would fly an Orca through nullsec without a scout), and it was actually the most excitement I had in the game for a few months.

The question is, why was I loyal to the JUNTA clan? That is where morale comes into play. Let’s look at the definition of the word morale. From Wikipedia:

morale is the capacity of a group of people to pull together persistently and consistently in pursuit of a common purpose

JUNTA has, what is in my opinion, and very good purpose. Quoted from their corp description:

Executive SummaryThe Rule of Five corporation, and associated gaming clan, is the premier online organization for working adults. Our members are expected to be mature, independent, reasonable, friendly and helpful. The mission is to provide an environment that facilitates active participation, team work, and goal achievement.

We operate on five core principles that help us deliver a positive gaming experience for the mature player.

1. Maturity
2. Working Adults
3. Camaraderie
4. Tolerance
5. Leadership

Our in game focus is to provide a well rounded experience in both empire and 0.0 space to new and experienced members. We pursue activities in all forms of PvE and PvP. All player backgrounds and player skill levels are welcome to apply.

This all holds true. They are all a group of very mature adults, and understand that the focus is not on playing EVE, but that life outside the game holds a great importance. Morale, for the most part, was always high, even under the constant war decs. Because of this, the people who fly in the corporation remain loyal.

To maintain loyalty to your corp, you must have a set of goals that the people playing the game have in common. Be it having the best wormhole corp, taking over industry and the market within a sector, or just being the best damn pirate you can possibly be. Without goals, the people who choose to fly with you will lose their morale, loyalty will falter, and the corporation itself will collapse.

Of course, currently I only pay fealty to me, but that may change some day.
