BB #25 – “With whom lie the advantages derived from Heaven and Earth?”

Welcome to the twenty-fifth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week or so to post articles pertaining to the said topic. This month’s topic comes to us from @Tetraetc – “Tetra’s EVE Blog” – who asks: “Have Alliances and the sovereignty system limited the amount of PVP and RP potential in Null sec? Imagine a Null Sec where anyone could build outposts wherever. Would the reduction of the alliance game mechanic, and the removal of the sovereignty game mechanics (or the modifcation of it from Alliance level to Corp level for that matter) force more PVP into Null sec, or would giant power blocs like the NC still form themselves?”

When Master Sun (Sun Tzu, the Tzu just means master (like Loa Tzu), and please remember it is pronounced soon-tzee) talked of Heaven, he was speaking much more literally in the sense of the changes of the seasons, the elements, wind, clouds, nature as a whole. In our case, Heaven can and will only refer to CCP, since they are the true gods over their game.

When Master Sun spoke of Earth, we can look directly at the translation and apply it to New Eden easily:

  • Distances
  • Danger
  • Security
  • Open ground
  • Narrow Passes
  • the Chances of Life and Death

What does this have to do with sovereignty mechanics in game? Good question. Can’t say I really know, I just thought it sounded cool 😉

In all seriousness, what would happen if CCP were to remove sovereignty mechanics from the game?

Heaven, as defined above, is something that we cannot change. The whims of CCP are as fluid as the weather itself. While we, as players, can attempt to influence the changes that CCP makes, the fact remains that it is, and always will be, their game. They can remove or add mechanics as they see fit. To be successful, though, one must learn to use Heaven to his advantage. To use the rules in a manner that appears to be breaking them, while still being within the boundaries that Heaven allows.

New Eden and all it comprises is Earth. The systems, the stargates, the natural choke points, the gate camps (with or without bubbles), roaming pirates, anything that influences life and death within the game.

Definitions in hand, let us look back to the topic of the day.

Without the Alliance mechanic, you would still have people forming large blocks to control massive amounts of space. A small group of people can never control any amount of space, mechanics or not. Let’s pretend that we have corp X who wants to control system XX. XX has stargates that lead into systems YY and ZZ, who are being controlled by corps Y and Z respectively. X has two options available to them to try and retain their space, destroy corps Y and Z, take over their space, spread themselves thinner, and try to defend 3 systems instead of their 1, or form a coalition with corps Y and Z. This is all about Earth, and being master of it. You have to work within the guidelines of Heaven to be able to take ownership of Earth.

Since alliance mechanics are not necessary to form a coalition with them (as imposed or removed by Heaven), they just need a diplomatic agreement between the 3 corps to form a nonaggression pact. Also, with these 3 corps in a coalition, they can now attempt to do something more. Perhaps they like what they see in system VV, but don’t like V corp because they are continually aggressing against Y corp. The 3 can work together to remove V corp from system VV, and move into that system as well, spreading resources from 3 corps to control system VV, instead of worrying about just one corp trying to defend multiple systems. Eventually, as they spiral out, they pick up more corps into their coalition, and shove more corps out, allowing them to control more space, all without the necessity of game mechanics to give them sovereignty. Of course EVE is a game of trust, so more than likely the coalition will rot from the inside and eventually die, but you never know.

Does this mean there will necessarily be more PVP between players? Probably, because instead of shooting at POSs or SBUs, you will need to shoot at pilots until they are all dead or they can’t take any more of the attack and leave the space entirely.

Eventually, to become master of both Heaven and Earth, the same blocs we see now will form as a means of ensuring mutual security over a given amount of space. Within this emergent system, this is the only way people will be able to control Earth, because Heaven will always be out of their hands.
